You Don’t Heal All at Once

Some crashes teach you more than clean runs ever could.

Imagine for a moment the path that one must take to travel from New York to Los Angeles. The path is long, twisting, and will take you a while before you reach your destination. Along that path, you are likely to encounter some problems, a few potholes, some construction, and a breakdown or two.
But that's life, and those obstacles that you once thought were the problems in your life, actually turned out to be your upgrade notifications.
As a technologist and software developer, I was taught to upgrade any software that was being developed constantly. Many of my generation will remember DOS, that original predecessor to today's Windows.
We’re currently on Windows version 11or so. The simple truth we have become accustomed to is that an operating system like this gets upgrades, security updates and a host of patches on a regular basis. These only happen because in essence, something went wrong. A bug was found. Some unexpected error. A system crash that wiped out your entire hard drive.
But what if that same process was happening for you?
The earliest versions of yourself
When you are young, you are a blank slate. You have a very basic set of operating instructions. You are told to walk, not to run. You are told “do not touch”. Or simply told “NO:..
You are not yet out of your alpha build stage yet. In fact you are effectively an MVP, or Minimal Viable Product of a human being. The earliest stage where no one truly knows what your capable of, or exactly what will become of you.
Your First Security Updates
As you grew up you were given your first set of “security updates”. If you came from my generation that likely involved some for of what we would not consider “capital punishment” – the spanking. We got those spankings because we did something wrong. Well, We got caught doing something wrong. We likely knew what we did was wrong. We did those things anyways.
But we knew back then that there was a potential risk factor involved. If we got caught we were not going to sit down for a few hours. But we learned the lesson. We learned not to continue trying to push out luck and to do stuff wrong.
IF we got punishment because we stole something, we stopped stealing. If we got punished for skipping school, we stopped missing classes. In essences these security updates taught us to avoid potential threats and dangers that could cause us future harm.
Of course, not all security updates came from our parents either. There were those updates that you learned from a coworker who lied about you. OR the girlfriend or boyfriend that broke your heart. Perhaps you were constantly fighting with siblings, and under a constant barrage of updated behavior patterns.
Self-Application of Updated Routines
Eventually, you begin to be self-aware. You realize that you are capable of not just getting upgrades from other people, but that you can actively decide your own upgrade structures. This opens up a completely new world to you. You begin a new version of yourself.
This version often comes with a series of much needed upgrades. You begin updating your Mentality Core programming with affirmations, goal setting, and confidence routines. You upgrade your Red Flag Detection systems in your heart in order to avoid relearning lessons that nearly broke you years earlier.
You begin updating your exterior shell with a brand new “Body maintenance upgrade package”. In essence you are now programming yourself, for yourself. No longer dependent upon the instruction sets of those around you.
You begin replacing the parts of you that are outdated, in need of repair, or warn out. Not physically, but emotionally, spiritually, at a soul level.
What Version Are You?
We have all had security updates—moments that taught us to protect our peace, set boundaries, lock out what once walked in unchecked.
There have been bug fixes—those “aha” breakdowns that came from doing life the hard way... again.
Occasionally, we get driver updates—where new tools, new people, or new wisdom helped us interact with the world differently.
Even your UI has changed. When you don’t show up the same anymore. Carrying yourself with scars now. Carrying them forward.
You’re no longer who you were before.
Not Yourself 1.0.
Probably not even 6.0.
You’ve been through heartbreak patches, mindset tweaks, and emotional reboots.
Some days you will crash.
Some days you will reboot on the fly.
But you are always updating.
And you know what? That’s not weakness. That’s life.
The Reality of Upgrading
We treat growth like it’s this graceful, glowing process.
But more often it’s code rewritten at 3AM while the system’s still running.
It’s an emergency patch. A hard reset. A duct-taped soul with just enough faith to try again.
People say healing takes time. That’s true.
But what they don’t say is that healing takes iterations.
You don’t wake up whole. You wake up upgraded.
A slightly more stable version of yourself. Slightly wiser.
A little more resistant to the virus that crashed you the last time.
There was a time when I thought of myself as broken.
Too much pain. Too many dead ends. Too many patches just barely holding me together.
No, not broken. Maybe you’re not either.
Maybe you’re just installing the next version of who you’re meant to be.
It’s messy.
It’s glitchy.
And it sure as hell isn’t finished version yet.
But it’s a work in progress, and for today that’s enough.
Realize now, You’re not broken. You’re just updating to the latest version.
